Why a Good Aerial Pilates Syllabus Should Give You Freedom, Not Rules
Nov 07, 2026Why a Good Aerial Pilates Syllabus Should Give You Freedom, Not Rules
When you hear the word syllabus, what comes to mind?
A long list of exercises?
A strict order to follow?
Something you have to memorise before you're allowed to be creative?
I hope not!
For me, a syllabus is something much more exciting.
It's a foundation that gives teachers the confidence to explore.
Why foundations matter
Think about learning any new skill.
At first, we need guidance. We need to understand the basic principles, recognise important details and develop confidence.
As our understanding grows, we start noticing more possibilities.
The same is true in Aerial Pilates.
When we understand the relationship between the hammock, the body and the movement, we can begin to explore with greater intention.
Rather than asking, "What exciting move can I add?", we can ask, "What would help my clients develop from here?"
That's a very different way of thinking.
The difference between copying and understanding
We've all watched a beautiful movement demonstration and wanted to try it.
But being able to reproduce a sequence doesn't necessarily mean we understand it well enough to teach it.
Teaching involves recognising how different people move, knowing when to adapt and understanding what we're trying to achieve.
A thoughtful syllabus supports that deeper knowledge.
It helps us develop a framework for making decisions rather than relying on memory alone.
Creativity grows from confidence
I love seeing the moment when a teacher realises they don't have to teach every exercise exactly as they first learned it.
They begin exploring the details
They notice different ways of approaching a movement.
They become more confident asking questions and discovering their own teaching style.
That's when learning becomes really exciting.
The structure is still there, but now it's supporting something personal and creative.
Finding your own flow
At Air Control Pilates®, the syllabus brings together my background in Pilates and aerial movement.
My aim isn't to produce teachers who all teach identically.
It's to share the principles, understanding and confidence that allow each teacher to develop.
Because the best teaching comes from a combination of knowledge, curiosity and connection.
And that's something worth investing time in
